The most important LED terms, explained briefly and factually.
C
- Calibration For every screen, Led2move fine-tunes each module individually so all pixels show the same brightness and colour. Without calibration you would see patches and colour differences between the panels.
- Candela The base unit in which luminous intensity is measured. For screen brightness one usually works in nit (candela per square metre) rather than in candela itself.
- CMS Content management system: the software with which you manage the changing images and messages on the screen.
- Colour depth How many shades per colour the screen can show. The Led2move runs at 16-bit, good for 65,536 shades per colour and therefore smooth gradients without visible banding.
- Colour temperature Whether white looks warm (more yellow) or cool (more blue), expressed in kelvin. A screen can be set for this so the image looks natural for its surroundings.
- Contrast ratio How many times brighter the whitest image is than the darkest. A high value such as the 6,200:1 of the Led2move 4mm gives deep colours, even in bright ambient light.
G
- Greyscale The number of brightness steps per colour. More greyscale lets the Led2move show soft transitions and fine shadows instead of hard jumps.
I
- IP rating The two digits after 'IP' state how dust- and water-tight the housing is. The Led2move is rated IP66: fully dust-tight and resistant to powerful water jets.
L
- Legibility Whether passers-by can read the message easily. For a mobile screen this depends on brightness (7,500 nit), pixel pitch and the distance to the audience.
- Luminance The brightness of a screen, measured in nit (candela per square metre).
N
- Nit The common unit for brightness; 1 nit = 1 cd/m². The Led2move 4mm reaches 7,500 nit, so it is daylight and sun readable.
P
- Pixel The smallest image point of the screen, made up of a red, green and blue LED.
- Pixel pitch The distance between two pixel centres, in millimetres. On the Led2move it is 4.44 mm; a smaller pitch means a finer image you can view sharply from closer up.
R
- Refresh rate How often per second the screen refreshes. A high refresh keeps the image flicker-free, also when a camera films the Led2move.
S
- SMD LED An LED package with the red, green and blue chip mounted together on the surface (3-in-1). The Led2move uses this modern SMD technique for a fine, even image.
V
- Viewing angle Up to which sideways angle the screen stays bright and colour-accurate. Important for a mobile screen viewed from many directions along a road or on a square.
- Viewing distance The distance from which the image looks smooth. Rule of thumb: the pixel pitch in millimetres roughly equals the minimum optimal viewing distance in metres.
- VMS Variable message sign: an electronic screen with changing messages. One Led2move can serve several purposes this way.
